Brands of saxes for beginners are usually narrowed down to Selmer or Yamaha… they are quality instruments for a decent price. They are also pretty durable and can take a bit of punishment. Jupiter is also another well known student brand, and lately have been increasing in quality and innovation. Sub-brands like Bundy (made by Selmer) are also alright, but if in doubt, stick to the 3 name brands listed above. As far as models go there’s really not much difference, with the exception of ornamentaions like key shape, inlay, key guards. Do look for one with pinky finger rollers (though I think they all have them) and most now have a high F# key, which will be useful to you in a couple years, but not necessary. As for books and study methods, I recommend either Rubank Elementary Method Book I, or Essential Elements for Alto Sax (which also comes with a CD).
