Can you use a marching snare drum instead of a regular snare?

The above poster was correct, marching snares are made to project sound. They also sound WAY different than drum set snares should sound. I have some advice for you. First of all, one of the most important things you can learn on a drum set is control…especially when practicing rudiments. The purpose is practicing rudiments is speed and control. A large part of control is being able to play very quietly when you need to. If you don’t have a metronome, get one. Start practicing your rudiments at slow tempos. Keep your stick heights very low and gradually increase the tempo on your metronome. The tendency is to get louder as you get faster, but you want to fight that tendency…try to get faster while keeping your volume the same. You should be able to play your snare drum at a consistent volume, whether loud or quiet. Remember, you want to play your snare drum…don’t let it play you. Good luck, and happy drumming!
