A FULL REGIMEN of cephalexin (7 days) will kill bacteria that originate in the mouth. It is NOT the antibiotic of choice for a dental infection, and it is 3-4x more expensive than what you SHOULD be using (Penicillin) to kill those bacteria. Also, if the infection is long-standing, it will NOT work to kill the bacteria that do not use oxygen to survive (anaerobic bacteria), and they tend to be the most dangerous. Using less than a full regimen will subdue the infection, killing only the weakest, most antibiotic-prone organisms, and allow the most antibiotic-resistant ones to survive. Something tells me that if you have an antibiotic Rx lying around, you didn’t follow the directions that came with it when it was given to you (if it was even yours in the first place). If the pain is NOT due to an infection, and is simply a deep cavity that hasn’t made it into the nerve yet, it will not work for the pain.
