It is possible that he had an affair with a black lady. There were some black people in England in Shakespeare’s day. However, she would not have been very likely to have been an African American. Most Africans in England at that time would have come direct from Africa rather than from America. so she would just be an African rather than an African American. Or she might even have been born in England, since Africans had been around since at least the early Tudor period. However, the word ‘black’ in those days was sometimes used to refer to someone who was just dark as opposed to having the fashionable blonde hair and pale skin, so it might mean just a caucasian woman with dark hair and eyes and a sallow complexion. It is impossible to tell, but it is certainly not impossible that she could have been an actual black person.
