I don’t think it really matters whether they did or not, because there were no consequences which followed from any discovery. Even the viking colony in north America is of no real significance because it was abandoned after a few years. If the original settlers in the US had died out and no one ever made the attempt to settle again (which was actually a real possibility), then nothing of historical significance would have occurred. The important point about Columbus’s discovery was that it led to a continuous stream of further voyages which connected Europe and the Americas and totally changed the history of both continents. It was a pretty devastating impact for much of the native population, but its significance can hardly be doubted. It is similar to the story of the European voyages of exploration to other parts of the world.
