Didn President Bush allow funding for stem cell research already? Whats different?
In 2001 President Bush approved the use of stem cell lines created before that date for federally-funded research. It was claimed that there were 78 lines available. It has now become clear that most of those lines are not available (only about ten to twenty actually exist) and all of the lines that do exist are contaminated with the mouse feeder cells used to grow them. These shortfalls may be arguable, but new stem cell lines would eliminate these issues.
