In the March 1993 issue of the Canadian Volvo Owners Club Newsletter: Thomas Bryant has written a letter to Volvo USA protesting the fact that repair parts are not available for the Cold Start Device used on Diesel Engines. Thomas says that the cold start device has a limited life. When the device fails, the engine will continue to start and run reasonably well in either hot or cold weather, the only symptom the owner is likely to notice is that the engine stays on fast idle when the engine is hot.” Effectively, the injection timing is ADVANCED, leading to higher combustion temperatures. The cold start device fails due to “loss of working fluid from the thermostat,” which is part of the device.
