do bumblebees make hives?
Hi there happy_face, No,Bumblebees do not make hives(unless they are carpenters,as hives are wooden constructions made for Honeybees) However,Bumblebees do make nests, from regurgitated plant material which hardens into a paper type substance. The Queen Bumblebee usually contains within her thousands of fertilised eggs(from the previous year)In the Spring she then starts to construct the nest, and lays eggs as she goes along,as these larvae become bees they help her to enlarge the nest, and so on. Bumblebees do not usually live more than one year,at the end of that year the Queen finds a suitable hibernating place and awaits the Spring when it all starts over again! Queen Bumblebees obviously live longer than the other “ordinary” Bumblebees,up to 2 or 3 years, but not much longer.
