Do Catholics still believe it anything more than a business cult, after Mugabe was invited there for ceremony?
Church is the assembly of the People that God has called together from the ends of the earth. Neither God (who is Love) nor the Church ever disowns anyone. A person of his (or her) own free will may choose to separate themselves from God and the Church but this is always their choice and not God’s and not the Church’s. Occasionally, the Church may publicly recognize this separation by declaring that an excommunication has taken place. The purpose of excommunication is the correction and redemption of the person who has chosen to separate himself or herself from God and the Church. Automatic excommunication happens when Catholics commit certain offensives. This happens as soon as the offense is committed. Robert Mugabe has committed both apostasy and heresy which resulted in his automatic excommunication from the Catholic Church. Mugabe’s criminal and sinful acts have demonstrated his complete rejection of the most basic of Christian (and Catholic) principles.
