(Noa Vaisman) – 3 – 4:20, feenstra antechamber (1st floor) In the past few decades new scientific technologies have been rapidly shaping and changing the way we think about ourselves as humans. Through practices such as cloning, surrogacy and organ transplanting, to name only a few of these new technologies and their application, our basic social and biological categories are questioned and reformulated. Many of these changes are pushing our western based distinctions between the human and the animal and the human and the machine into new terrain requiring new ways of imagining ourselves and others. These changes also demand that we rethink some of our basic assumptions about humans and their rights. We will begin our workshop/discussion with a few short segments from the SciFi series Battlestar Gallactica.
