Do I need internet security software installed on my laptop if connecting to an ethernet?
typically the routers and servers used do have preinstalled firewalls on them. However these aren’t always up to scratch. I have one on mine and it still lets through unwanted viruses, trojans and files. I don’t want to get into a war of brands here, but Norton (Symantec) aren’t very secure. For a start most viruses these days piggyback off of other viruses designed to destroy Norton. So that’s a no no. Also Mcafee are pretty much in the same boat. The bigger the name the more viruses there are out there designed to destroy them. I use Windows Live Onecare. Relatively cheap, blends in with my windows operating system well, and I can install up to 3 computers on my account. You could let the other people in your dorm use it and then get some money back off them for cheap booze or whatever you uni types do these days. Crazy kids! The craziest thing you’ll hear on this site – and from me, no less – is that it’s safer to not have any internet security and just use window’s built in one tha
