Do ionic air purifiers really work? If so, what should I look for when buying one?

Just this morning (05 April 2005), it was reported on the news that Consumer Reports has published in it’s May issue a report that most of the air purifiers that it tested not only failed to make the air any cleaner, but that they actually release harmful levels of ozone into the air, making things worse. I note that in response to the news that most of these devices emit harmful levels of ozone, Thommy has edited his answer to include a glowing praise for ozone as a miracle air purifier and disinfectant. What Thommy doesn’t mention is that ozone is fairly toxic, and proven to cause damage to the lungs and respiratory tract (See http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/7064 ). I find this quite ironic, considering Thommy’s baseless rants in other answers where he blames all manner of illness on imaginary toxins, and speaks of eliminating toxins as the cure for all ills; and yet here advocates the use of and exposure to a
