Do males or females make better pets?

Everybody has a different opinion on this question! Both male and female poodles make great pets and it is usually just individual preference as to which one to make part of the family. I personally feel that males are much more loving and get more attached to you than the females do. The main factor in people choosing a female over a male is that they worry about a male dog lifting their leg on things as they get older. I do not deny that if a male is left unaltered and around other dogs that they do tend to want to mark their territory. This is a natural instinct and is not the dog’s fault! If a male is neutered early enough, this generally does not happen. In fact if they are neutered at a very young age, most never even learn to lift their leg and squat like a female to pee. Most people who have a problem with males lifting their leg after they have been neutered, have usually waited until they are adults or are already marking their territory before altering them.

Males and females make equally good pets. The collie is a breed in which there is very little difference in temperament between males and females. The males are larger and carry a fuller, more impressive coat. The females are more compact and take less time to groom. The choice is really a matter of personal preference. Neutering of companion collies at an appropriate age (6 months for females and 8-10 months for males) will avoid the possibility of unwanted heat cycles or of leg-lifting habits associated with an unneutered pet.

Both males and females make great pets! All rats are individuals, but males tend to be more lazy and laid back while females tend to be more curious and active. Baby rats of both sexes tend to be hyper, sometimes up until they are nearing a year old. If you have a specific personality type in mind look into adopting some adult rats!

This is a hard one! I feel and most other experienced breeders will agree, that both sexes are excellent pets. Some say that males are a bit more loving and will adore their families and make great house pets. Since I have both, I can’t say that is true. I think it differs with each individual animal. My girls are as sweet and loving as they come. Females are usually smaller than males. Intact (not spayed) females will come into season approximately every six months and must be completely confined for three weeks during that time. Intact (not neutered) males tend to wander, especially if there are females in the neighborhood who are in season. If you spay or neuter your pet, these things will not be a factor. Neutering will also prevent some health problems that can develop later in your dog’s life. My recommendation is to spay/neuter early! It’s so much easier on them when they are young.
