Do pine martens eat squirrels?
It is a common misconception that pine martens predate squirrels and could therefore be a threat to the rare red squirrel. Dietary studies have shown that squirrels represent less than 1% of the diet of pine martens in Britain and Ireland. There have also been suggestions that pine martens are more likely to predate grey squirrels than red squirrels, which is good news for the native red!
