Estrogen is the primary hormone for the development of general female characteristics. It is present in both males and females, but higher levels of estrogen are significantly produced by the female during the reproductive stage, where in characteristics such as formation of breasts develops. Males, however, DO need estrogen at certain levels. In fact, the body sends estrogen to the brain to react with other hormones to produce masculine mental characteristics. The word “female primary hormone” is often an overstatement of the general characteristics of estrogen, because estrogen is a vital hormone in both genders. Despite being a hormone that is beneficial for either genders, excessive amounts of estrogen in males produces a condition that is called gynecomastia, or development of breasts in men.
