Do tranquilizers work to reduce stress?
Tranquilizers are medicines that temporarily calm you down during stressful situations; they may be helpful but only on a short term basis. They slow the heart rate, relax muscles and nerves and may be prescribed in a higher dosage at night as a sleeping pill. Long term use of tranquillizers can cause depression, memory loss, mental confusion, stomach disorders and aggressive behavior. The withdrawal effects can be very unpleasant and include sickness, headaches, irritability, anxiety, nausea and in some cases panic attacks. If you have been on tranquillizers for some time you should come off them gradually over a period of time and with medical supervision. Never stop taking them suddenly and always ask your doctor for advice when taking tranquillizers or when trying to quit taking them.
