Like Duirmuid, I object to the term “Broken Britain”. There is a portion of Britain that is broken though. There is no denying that. When I think of poverty of the past, it was much more widespread, with much of the population just getting by on just enough to keep fed, with no money for anything with any glamour to it. Neighbours were all in the same boat and helped each other out. What glimpses of another life they had, were in fantasy form from Hollywood. The haves must have seemed like they lived in another world. Today, comparative wealth is more commonplace. Many more people have money to spend on luxury items. However, there are still many people who just scrape by and can barely afford what the majority take for granted. TV pumps a daily view of fantasy wealth and knowledge of how others live, with luxury in easy reach. The resentment of the have-nots is fed by that.
