Do you think the United States federal government should fund research that uses Stem Cells?

Unfortunately, the abortion lobby has latched itself onto the stem cell research issue. There are many stem cells out there to be researched, govt funding should not go to the embryonic stem cell research. Any progress made with stem cells have came from other stem cells. I don’t believe that the govt needs to be involved in everything. Think the IRS tax code. Remember, every loophole in the code was introduced by someone in Congress helping out a buddy. There is a fortune to be made from cures in stem cell research, people should go after it. I object to govt funded projects, especially in medicine, that make fortunes for the pharmaceutical companies. Our taxes paid for the research.

Much of the controversy has been over “embryonic” stem cell research. Adult stem cells have been studied with federal funding for many years, and I think it should continue. I also think more ethic boundaries should be set up to guard against misuse of this research. Should the government fund embryonic stem cell research? I don’t think so. There are arguments for both sides, but the main argument for it is that it “could” cure many illnesses. Since it involves the destruction of living embryos, the chance of a cure compared to the certanty of death for the embryo does not balance for me. Whether the embryo was destined for destruction before birth is irrelevant, to me. That is just my opinion, and I am sure others have different opinions. I hope others can view this opinion without grading too harshly. I hope this helps.
