Does a private variable in Java stays private when compiled to javascript?

Hello, I am looking at GWT’s features and can’t figure out weather a variable declared in java as private will stay private once compiled in GWT. By private I mean unaccessible to anyone except for the constructor or the construtors functions. Thanks.
