2.6 – 1994 Dauer 962 LeMans 0 to 60 on 2.6 sec The McLaren F1 is the current holder of the “fastest production car in the world” title, but only because other capable competitors, for some reason or other, haven’t yet been subjected to a top speed test. Manufacturers have been chasing this title for years. There was once a time when the 352 hp Lamborghini Miura was the world’s fastest production car, with its V12 engine powering it to 170 mph back in 1966. The buzz at L.A.’s annual Auto Show is all about the newest, fastest car in the world, Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4. The super sleek car has a 16-cylinder engine in a “W” layout with four turbos, giving 1001 horsepower running through a clutchless sequential 7-speed transmission. It has a launch control feature which allows the driver, when pressing the brake and gas at the same time, to make the most of the car’s rocket-like propulsion and jet forward. It accelerates to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and hits top speeds of 253 miles per hour.

ThrustSSC (SuperSonic Car) is a British designed and built jet-propelled car developed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers and Jeremy Bliss, which holds the world land speed record, set on October 15, 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first land vehicle to break the sound barrier, not considering the earlier but unproven claim of the Budweiser Rocket.
