Does Apache need any special compilation flags to work with the module?

Yes. The Apache Web Server must be configured with Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) support. i.e. ./configure –enable-module=so If Apache was not configured with this option it must be reconfigured and recompiled before the module will work.
