ECT was discovered by two neurologists who (for some reason) were visiting a slaughterhouse. They realized that whenever the cows would get the stun-bolt driven through their heads, they seemed almost euphoric and calm. They later discovered that the stun gun actually induced a temporary seizure in the cow. In the old days, seizures were induced with dangerous drugs and poisons, such as insulin and curare.
