Does IVF increase the chance of twins or triplets?
Yes. More than one embryo is placed into the womb during embryo transfer, and therefore the chances of more than one embryo implanting are quite high. If a woman becomes pregnant through IVF, she has an almost 15% chance of producing twins and 5% chance of triplets. Multiple pregnancies carry an increased risk of miscarriage, premature births and other problems. With triplets, the risks are so great that selective embryo reduction may be indicated. This involves removing one of the three implanted embryos.
