Does Pope Pius XII Deserve to Be a Saint?
The Vatican has stirred up an old controversy by moving Pope Pius XII closer to Sainthood. Pius XII, who was Pope during World War II, has been accused by many of being far too friendly to Hitler’s Germany and not condemning the Holocaust sufficiently. The Vatican counters that Pius XII did use quiet diplomacy to try to save Jews and other victims of the Holocaust and points out that Vatican City opened up to Jews and other refugees when Germany occupied Italy in 1943.
