Does TCAS II operate at low altitudes?
TCAS II collision avoidance functionality is designed to take account of an aircraft’s proximity to the ground, which means it has manoeuvring and other TCAS-related limitations, as follows: (a)1550ft (+/- 100ft) and below, TCAS II inhibits increase descend RAs; (b)1100ft (+/- 100ft) and below, TCAS II inhibits descend RAs; (c)1000ft (+/- 100ft) and below, TCAS II inhibits all RAs; (d)500ft (+/- 100ft) and below, TCAS II inhibits all aural annunciations (warnings). EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System), wind-shear and stall warnings will take precedence over TCAS II RAs. TCAS II will automatically switch to the TA-only mode of operation once one of the above mentioned warnings has been generated. It will remain in TA-only mode for 10 seconds after the GPWS/TAWS or wind shear warning is removed.
