Does the Wellness Center do Rapid Strep Tests?
Rapid strep tests are available in the Wellness Center and will be done at the discretion of the provider. Not all sore throats are caused by the strep bacteria. In fact, most sore throats are viruses and cannot be treated with antibiotics. If the practitioner feels that a rapid strep test is indicated, your throat will be swabbed and the results will be available in five minutes. If it is positive, an antibiotic will be prescribed for you. The test can only be performed accurately if you have been sick for at least 24-48 hours. If you have recently had a strep infection, a rapid strep test cannot be performed as the results will be affected by recent antibiotic use.
