Our society has clearly paired violence and sex together in the media. We are socialized to believe that somehow violent sex is erotic. However, there is a big difference between fantasy and reality. People have control over their own fantasies. If they want something to stop–they can just change the outcome of their fantasy or what they are thinking about. During a sexual assault, however, a victim has no control. Furthermore, the media portrays rape as being very glamorous and erotic. The reality is that rape is violent and demeaning, often times leaving physical and emotional scars. They don’t show the bruises, blood, tears, STDs, unwanted pregnancies, death, depression, terror, or rape in the fantasies. Also important to note is that men are virtually always the ones that claim women have this fantasy.
