I’m sorry to hear of your husband’s misfortune with his tattoo. Let me start by just telling you that BACTERIA are what cause infection. Bacteria live on EVERY SURFACE. It is difficult to say why the tattoo became infected this time. Unless EVERY product used on the tattoo is sterile (sterility and disinfection are different! Sterile means all spores are killed. Disinfection means that it is clean, but can still have some bacteria.) Anyway…unless every product used is sterile, they could all potentially be the culprit. The area becomes an open wound once the needles puncture the epidermis. Once bacteria get into that open wound, an infection CAN start. Our body fluids actually have natural enzymes that kill a lot of bad bacteria. Sometimes however, they can’t fight it all. If the tattoo artist touches anything such as tattoo bottles, spray bottles, phones, or any other surface that is not covered in plastic with his gloves, he could transfer bacteria to the wound.
