Magdalena Bay is pretty well protected on all sides by mountainous barrier islands off the coast. When there are no winds, the water can look like a lake. It can be so flat that it looks like a layer of glass. However, when the winds pick up, the water gets quite choppy and bumpy. On a windy day, the waves can be anywhere between 2 and 5 feet, trough to crest. The trough is the bottom of the wave, and the crest is the top. A local boat driver told me that during the last storm, the waves were up to 10 feet.
