How can I E-file only state taxes?

A few states require you to e-file your State return at the same time that you file your Federal return. If your State is one of those States and you have already e-filed your Federal return then you cannot e-file your State return, you’ll have to file a paper return and mail it in. See your State’s tax department website for guidance.

I don’t know of any states that let you e-file the state alone. They all count on the error checking process that the IRS uses to catch their formatting errors as well, so they don’t accept returns from an Electronic Return Originator except as part of a federal/state combo.
