Washing with a good detergent is always helpful, and I’m sure you already do that. Depending on if the clothes are white or colored, you can use bleach. And, what I learned really does work (have done it for years), rinse the clothes with vinegar. Plain, white vinegar! It really does work. Wash as usual, then turn the machine back to the deep rinse and put in 1 cup of white vinegar, and soak, spin, rinse. I’ve done this for 30 years, and it works every time. It also helps get excess detergent out of the clothes.
