How can I go about learning more about Southwest Indians? What book or books would you recommend?
The #1 book I would recommend to gain a perspective on American Indians from the perspective of American Indians is Dee Brown’s “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee”. I just finished it a few days ago. It is a powerful book, a work of history, based on first person accounts. It shattered my prior (mis)understanding of this period in American history (roughly 1860-1890). You will find it speaks about American Indians native to the Southwest and American Indians who were forced to move to the Southwest. History is written by the victors. The White Man “conquered” the American Indian. I learned about American Indians by reading books written by White Men. American Indians lacked a written tradition. But, there are some books written from oral accounts. Dee Brown’s book is an excellent example. When we study it is always wise to read from all perspectives.
