How can I prepare for the Reading Specialist Praxis test?

The most import thing to do to prepare for the Praxis test is to take the practice tests provided by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). These practice tests give insight into the format and content of the tests. You can find them here at http://www.ets.org/praxis). They have pdf examples of the reading test here – http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/PRAXIS/pdf/5710.pdf. They also have webinars and some other materials there. ETS also publishes several booklets which are helpful for Praxis preparation.

Many colleges also offer free support and assistance to their students who are preparing to take the tests.

Took the Reading Specialist Praxis 2 for the third time yesterday.  Every time I have taken it, it has been a different test focusing on different aspects.  Some of the common area’s I got in all three were the following:  ELL Questions, lots of assessment questions (e.g. what was this reading specialist trying to test by doing this?), seemed to always focus on lower school although I got a few middle school questions, how to work with teachers (e.g. how would you approach a teacher who your Principal tells you needs help with teaching her kids reading better in her content area?).  I would suggest EOU’s 1-credit class and also Praxis review books and/or tests.  Good luck – I’m REALLY hoping I don’t have to sit it again.

We don’t offer Praxis review workshops at Portland State. However, Eastern Oregon University offers a 1-credit exam preparation course (READ 542) through the ReadOregon program. TSPC has set 610 as the passing score for the Reading Specialist Praxis test (code # 20300). Note: score requirements are listed on the TSPC website: www.tspc.state.or.us/testinfo.pdf. There are two columns with scores. One is the original cut score, and the other is the current cut score with the SEM (Standard Error of Measurement) applied. TSPC approved the additional SEM adjustment several years ago). Nearly everyone is able to pass the Praxis with no problem after they have taken the full ReadOregon program.
