How come our zoo; like most – only have Asian female elephants?
Asian females are the most docile of all elephants. They’re easier to train and take care of. Asian males and African males and females are larger and much more aggressive. In both species, males are especially aggressive and dangerous when in musth, which is a breeding cycle. Births of elephant babies in captivity are very rare. Newborn calves can weigh 170 to 300 pounds. The gestation period is 18 to 22 months, which is the longest of any known living mammal.
