How dangerous is Rio de Janeiro for a single female traveler?

Rio is probably not much more dangerous than other cities. It really all depends on how you carry yourself, the way you dress and behave and how safe your travel practices are. I would not make blanket announcements that you are alone. If you are dining, at a club or other social place, you may not want it known you are by yourself. I wouldn’t walk to far in the night alone. Even if it is just a couple of blocks, take a cab. Rio is known as a place to let your hair down and relax. Since you will be alone, I would be a bit more reserved. Also, take care to stay in the main area of tourism. Don’t stray into neighborhoods that may not be meant for you to visit. You might also want to have a cell phone with you. Program the name of the accommodation’s front desk in the event you have an emergency.
