How did Harriet Beecher Stowe free slaves?
In those days, novels were first published one chapter at a time in newspapers before appearing in book form. Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, horrified readers and fueled abolitionist sentiments, especially in the North. Of course, the slaves were not freed until after the war began, but I am told that when Lincoln met Stowe, he called her the little woman who started the big war.
