How did Highland park become as bad of an area it is?
Hamtramack and Highland Park are separate cities that happen to be surrounded by Detroit. Detroit has nothing to do with those cities. I can’t say much for Hamtramack, except there used to be a lot of Polish people there. They had nice stores, and a feeling of safeness. Highland Park was once a city were the elite lived, you could probably compare it to today’s Birmingham. They had lots of small shops, was where Henry Ford had his first assembly line. Chrysler’s world headquarters were there until the 90’s. The Davison Freeway was the FIRST freeway in the world ( all 2.8 miles of it) Highland Park is the birthplace of Bill Haley, the artist who first made music that later became known as rock’n’ roll. The Ford plant gave birth to Hazel Park ( known as a bedroom community) The workers couldn’t afford to live in Highland Park.
