How did Syngenta become involved in the Humanitarian Golden Rice project?
The inventors, Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer, recognized early on that while they had an important technical achievement in their hands, they required an additional set of skills and expertise to get their invention to those who needed it most. Syngenta was the inventors preferred partner given the companys past record in the field of carotenoid modification in plants, their long standing involvement in joint EC-funded research programmes, a track record of donation of such technologies to the developing world, and its long experience in regulatory affairs, licensing and intellectual property.
