How did the modernisation of Japanese society after the Meiji restoration affect the Daimyo before 1912?
I’m going to answer this to the best of my ability. Okay here goes: Daimyo subsequently were made to give back their power to the Emperor. It was done so, because the Abolition of the Han System was an act passed by the Emperor, to abolish the traditional feudal domain and regions, and was replaced by introducing the centralized government authority also known as the Prefectures of Japan. The Daimyos were given non hereditary government offices of their former domain and were also appointed as governors as well. I wouldn’t say that the former Daimyos were restricted from any power. Because they were given titles and such. But, those Daimyos did however, lose the name Daimyo and they were made to regulate their domains by strict central government rule. The Meiji Oligarchy, which was the new ruling class that helped to push the abolition of the four divisions of society, also made stipulations as to who the former Daimyos could name as subordinates.
