About Humidity Humidity is a measure of the amount of water in the air. It can be measured in terms of absolute humidity–the actual quantity of water in a given volume of air. More commonly, however, it is measured as relative humidity–the proportion of water in the air compared to the total amount of water that can be dissolved in it at a given temperature. When the meteorologist says that the humidity is at 80 percent, for example, that means that 80 percent of the maximum amount of water for that given temperature is dissolved in the air. Temperature and Humidity As the temperature increases, the air can hold more water vapor. As it declines, water vapor condenses out of the air. This is why there is dew on the grass in the morning. The temperature usually drops at night, causing the water to drop out of the air. A humidifier takes advantage of this principle to decrease air humidity.
