How do different streetscape elements play a role in creating a vibrant urban area?
Sidewalks and streetscape elements such as lighting, trees and benches set the stage for urban living, where people typically walk, bike or take transit to nearby destinations. If sidewalks and adjacent public spaces are safe, comfortable and convenient, then we can easily imagine ourselves going from one place to another or living and working in an area. The key, of course, is attracting people — people who want to live, work and visit an area. Sidewalks and streetscapes are important, but successful urban areas and streets need a concentration of uses and density of people. What attracts people is other people. The proposed downtown code does away with the idea of setbacks, replacing them with build-to lines that encourage buildings to be closer to the street. How does this impact an area’s feel or sense of place? Urban life becomes much more desirable, safe and comfortable when we pass interesting buildings and activity rather than long stretches of surface parking lots or buildings
