How do GATE Coordinators receive referrals?
Elementary school principals — in their roles as GATE Site Coordinators — seek referrals in October of each school year from teachers for 4th and 5th grade students they believe may be GATE eligible. Teachers submit referrals by completing the District GATE referral form and completing a GATES rating form. [provide hotlink(s)] The principal reviews the rating forms and refers any student who scores at or above the standard score of 111 on the GATES in one or more areas including intellectual ability, academic skills, creativity, leadership, and/or artistic talent. Beginning in 4th grade, Site GATE Coordinators will refer any student who has scored at or above the 98th percentile in two consecutive years on the same or multiple portions of the STAR test program, excluding the 3rd and 7th grade CAT/6 Language and CST General Math tests.
