Rake the garden evenly.Pile 1 to 2 inches of compost atop the raked soil. Mix the compost into the worked soil with a shovel. Compost amends clay-based soil as well as sand-based soil. Rake the area even.Plant your vegetable garden or landscaping directly after amending the soil, if it is spring time. If you amend the soil in the fall or winter, with the anticipation of planting the next spring, cover the newly amended soil with 2 inches of mulch for protection.
