If you have the right skills, it’s possible to become a mystery shopper by contacting and registering with legitimate mystery shopping companies. Genuine mystery shopping companies, or secret shopping companies as they are also called, don’t charge a fee to apply. A good place for those with an interest in mystery shopping is to contact the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA). The Association regulates secret shopping companies and also provides certification and training courses for those who want to become a mystery shopper. The Association’s website should be easily found when typing MSPA into an Internet search engine. It’s extremely important to use caution and common sense when applying to become a mystery shopper. BECOMING A MYSTERY SHOPPER Mystique Shopper Mystery Shoppers are not employees, but rather independent contractors hired on a “per assignment” basis. Meaning, you are called upon as needed to perform “Mystery Shops” as they become available. Your frequency of work is based on (1) your flexibility and willingness, (2) how quickly and how well you complete the assignments, and (3) the number of clients vs. shoppers we have in your area. There is cash to be made and perks to be had but being a “Shopper” is also a serious craft. PAY? Becoming a “Mystery Shopper” is not a “get rich quick” scheme, although it usually affords the shopper great rewards, perks and the opportunity to make money. How much depends upon you and the assignments that you are lucky enough to get in on. Almost every shop pays differently.
