I’m a songwriter in Atlanta and below is the advice that I was given when I first started out and also a little of my own advice as someone working in the industry: 1st it is not that easy to get publishing deals now as most publishing companies want you to already have credits under your belt before they sign you. Not only that but there are a lot of politics involved when you sign a deal with a publisher so you don’t want to just jump into signing just because you’re offered a deal. You want to make sure the publisher will work for your career. Most of the time when publishers have big name writers and people who have a guaranteed track record those writers get priority and the newer less established writers can sometimes be waiting around for years before they get their first break. Your best bet is to link up with a production company and build your catalogue of songs that way. You would want to link up with a production company that has good relationships with not only the labels
