How do I cancel my AOL account?

Good luck. I tried them once with a trial CD. I called them and cancelled before the trial period was over and all was set. Four months later, I got a hefty bill. I called and spent (literally) 4-1/2 hours on the phone being bounced from department to department. They claim never to have received my cancellation request. Additionally, they had racked up overdraft fees with my bank due to trying to draw from a closed account. I got them to reverse those charges though the bank only reversed some of the fees. Two months after that, I got another bill and letters from my bank that they had tried to withdraw funds from the closed account again. Luckilly, the bank did not charge me; I had a valid standing “stop payment” order. Another four hours on the phone and a bit of threatening finally closed the account permanently and unequivocally. There are outstanding lawsuits against AOL for this. You have been warned….

I cancelled AOL back in December 2008. Here it is March 2009 and each month I receive via snail mail what looks like a check from AOL and it’s a threatening AOL collection account for $11.99 past due. But if you turn over the paper wok in smaller fonts you can “reinstate your membership check here and provide your billing information below” After this crap with them I will never go back. I had them for 15 years.

To answer your question, I thought it would be fun to share exactly how I tried to cancel my own AOL account. Fair warning: it’s not a pretty story… I started out by logging in to my AOL service. The logical next step would be to try Keyword “cancel” or “quit”, but “cancel” pops up a “not yet available. Come back soon” message (which is weird) and “quit” produces a full blown search of the Web. Buried in those search results, however, is what I seek: Cancel AOL Account. Click on it and — amazingly — “The area you have reached is not yet available on this version of AOL. Please try back again later.” Which leads to the question: how do I cancel my $#&@*$(& AOL account?? My next attempt at
