Components NeededTo configure a cable modem for Wi-Fi, attach a wireless router to the cable modem with an Ethernet cable. The following instructions are based on the use of a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router, model number WPN824, and a Comcast Motorola 585120 Cable Modem. Though the configuration may vary slightly with other equipment, the setup basically will be the same. Make sure that neither piece of equipment is plugged into an electrical outlet while connecting the two together.ModemPlug the cable Internet cable into the port marked “cable” on the back of the cable modem. After it is plugged in, tighten the screw mechanism if applicable. Find the port on the back of the modem marked “Ethernet.” Plug an Ethernet cable into it.Attach to a RouterPlug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port outlined in yellow on the back of the router. If using a different model of router, look for the “Internet,” “Internet in,” or “Ethernet” port.
