having taught 10th graders for 18 years, I can give you a pretty comprehensive overview. A common class schedule for 10th graders is: Sophomore English-This is World Literature. I know one of the books taught is Maus another is Joy Luck Club, but there are many novels that are on the 10th grade list. (11th grade is American Lit, 12th grade is European Lit and I think 9th grade is Ethnic Lit). NCLB testing is a big deal so students who are reading below grade level are required to take an additional (remedial) reading class. The kids hate this class because it is deadly boring, but instead of working on their skills they tend to cut this class which means they fail a class and still are reading below grade level. There are regular and honors classes. If a student has been in the US less than 3 years (in CA these kids are in suburban schools, too. the are probably taking 2 ELD classes (1 reading and 1 composition) instead of a literature.
