How do I encourage small birds to my feeder instead of starlings?

I have two different types of feeders in my garden – the ones with a little perch on them which you fill with seed and cages for seed cake. The starlings in my garden tend to eat from the seed cake feeders leaving the tats (the joys of censorship!), sparrows and finches to use the perches. If you buy seed cakes in somewhere like Wilkinsons, they cost about £1 each, so I make my own with the cheapest lard I can find, melted and mixed with the same bird seed I put in the other feeders. I am guessing that the starlings prefer the seed cake cages because they are much easier to grip onto than the others.
