How do I get pumpkin seeds ready for planting?
It’s pretty easy to grow pumpkins. When you cut open the pumpkin to make your jack-o-lantern, scoop some of the seeds onto a newspaper or paper towel to dry. They don’t need to be spotlessly clean but do need to be spread out thinnly. Put them in a paper bag and place them in a cool dry place until spring-past your last frost date. Pumpkins need full sun and lots of room to grow, since they are vines and can put out vines 10-15+ ft long!! Prepare your garden site, flower bed, or even a flower pot, and directly plant the seeds in the prepared site-just poke about 2 seeds into the soil about 2 inches deep and 2″ apart. Space the seed sets about 4-5 ft. apart, if you want to grow more than a couple of plants. Water well and watch for them to sprout in a few days. You can gently lift the wayward vines to keep them inside the designated site, if you need to do so. They will require a lot of water, and can benefit with extra manure about half way through the summer. Since you live in OK, you
